A rare and highly distinctive example of the U.S. Army’s experimental headgear from the final stages of World War I; the Deep Salade helmet represents one of the largest and most dramatic designs trialed during this period. This particular piece retains its original coarse sand-textured painted finish, with the original steel liner band intact. The three-pad liner system remains present with its original rexine inner pouches, though the interior pads themselves are absent. Still fitted is the original khaki canvas chinstrap, complete with its early clutch-type closure buckle.
A very good and increasingly scarce specimen of American WWI helmet experimentation, seldom encountered in this condition.
