A fabulous condition London-made officer's visor cap. These caps were worn by members of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Air Force; they are identical. This example is marked on the sweatband ‘A & S’, which is the Company of Ayres & Smith of London, size ‘7’, dated ‘1943 ’, with the British broad arrow acceptance stamp. Soft Melton material, lighter tan centre band, standard brown chinstrap with highly gilded, very nice quality side buttons. The side buttons match magnificently with the quality of the American Eagle front badge. The sweatband is in beautiful condition, slightly loose at the rear of the cap from the main body; some stitches have rotted. An exceptionally nice silk label is fitted to the cap underneath a protective plastic crown liner:’Ayres & Smith, London W’ ‘Expressively for the United States Forces in European Operations.’ Any item of clothing or equipment British-made for the American Forces is considered amongst collectors extremely difficult and very desirable to obtain. A beautiful shape, no moth damage anywhere on the cap.
