This is a well-preserved veteran's kepi in traditional Confederate grey, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The United Confederate Veterans (UCV) was established as a fraternal organization for former members of the Confederate armed forces, holding significant reunions and meetings well into the 1920s.

The kepi features a short peak and is adorned with a bullion cap cord secured by American eagle side buttons. The grey fabric is in good condition with no moth damage, though there is some expected thinning to the nap of the material due to age. To the interior, the leather sweatband remains complete. An important historical detail is found on the inner side of the sweatband, which bears the name Captain F.A. Poche.

Felix Pierre Poche was a noted figure and a member of the Louisiana judiciary who had served as a Captain during the American Civil War. This headpiece represents a significant period of American veteran history, where former soldiers from both the Union and Confederate sides formed organisations to preserve the memory of their service.
