This is a classic American-produced Brodie helmet from the First World War, serving as a poignant relic of the U.S. Marine Corps' involvement in the conflict. Remarkably, the remains of the original paper instruction label are still fitted to the crown rivet on the interior.
The exterior retains its characteristic rough sand-textured paint finish, showing some honest abrasions consistent with field use. Most notably, the helmet features the hand-painted insignia of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. At the very top of this painted insignia is the First World War era Marine Corps badge. A fascinating detail is the presence of one extra hole through the painted head of the Indian; historical records indicate that when painting these helmets, the unit was instructed to move the Marine Corps badge higher so the entirety of the 2nd Battalion insignia could be visible.
The 5th Marine Regiment earned great distinction for its service in France during the final stages of the war, particularly during the brutal fighting at Belleau Wood. This helmet represents a significant piece of American military history from a highly decorated unit.
