This is a truly spectacular and rare offering: a complete, museum-quality uniform for the Royal Company of Archers, dating from the pre-1870 period. The Royal Company of Archers serves as the Sovereign's Bodyguard in Scotland, a role equivalent to the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms in England. This paramilitary organisation is comprised of veteran military officers and attends the monarch at all major ceremonial events in Scotland.
The uniform is constructed from magnificent green cloth and remains in exceptional condition, entirely free from moth damage. The set is headlined by the long tail coat, which features exquisite hand-embroidery on the collar, cuffs, and rear coat tails. The gilt finish on the Queen’s crown buttons is superb, as is the quality of the removable shoulder boards. A minor seam tear is noted between the left shoulder board and the collar when viewed from the front, though this does not detract from the overall display.
Accompanying the tunic is the correct cocked hat, complete with a multi-embroidered Royal Company of Archers badge and a vibrant green plume. The ensemble includes the green sash featuring two company badges, a red sash, and the waist belt with a large, ornate belt plate. The weaponry and accoutrements are equally impressive, featuring a green velvet sword frog housing a complete sword in excellent condition. The bullion tassel is a highlight of the set, featuring a VR (Victoria Regina) scroll on the reverse.
