During WWI, Great Britain supplied Portugal with steel helmets, which had a fluted bowl and smooth lower brim. This example was used by the Portuguese Volunteer Legion fighting with the nationalist forces in Spain from 1936 to 39. Two bullet holes through the skull from the inside outwards, the lining all missing, the majority of the paint finish present with rust bleed around the lower rim, with the Portuguese Legion light green cross to the front. The Portuguese Volunteers were known as the Viriatos (The Green Legion).
