A superb example of the Type 3 RJT officer’s display piece, featuring a 1944 pattern construction with exceptional quality and presence. The core element is signed Noshu Ju KaneToshi, accompanied by a star stamp and dated 1943. A striking hamon is clearly visible, adding to its visual appeal.
Of particular note, the entire piece—including both hilt and scabbard—has at some point been fully overpainted in black. This is often associated with night operations, where reflection needed to be reduced during raids. The original knot remains in place and also shows signs of black paint staining, consistent with field use.
These more robust late-war examples were intended for practical service use and reflect the transition from earlier ceremonial designs to function-oriented field equipment.
A rare and fascinating display piece with both visual impact and historical depth.
