An excellent example of a late-war Waffen-SS camouflage helmet cover in the oak leaf pattern, reversible from spring to autumn. Purchased from one of the foremost UK collections around five years ago, it was quickly sold and has now been reacquired. The cover shows minimal signs of use, with just a single storage rust stain near the peak.
Constructed with three securing clips, each originally spring-loaded, though the springing mechanism has partially failed: one retains only a small section of its tension, while the other two are broken in situ, though some spring action can still be felt when tested by hand. Light surface rust is present on all three clips, with one area of rust bleeding onto the material, resulting in a minor tear. On the autumn camouflage side, the numbers 5659 are faintly visible.
Despite the known fragility of these covers, this example remains highly desirable, with strong colours and good overall condition. As collectors will appreciate, authenticity is always a point of scrutiny with SS helmet covers—this piece is guaranteed as original beyond doubt.
