An exceptionally rare example from our own collection, this SS officer’s saddle-shaped visor cap features the elusive cavalry yellow waffenfarbe, introduced only briefly in 1940. This cap is marked internally in two places to the 2nd Totenkopf Reiter Regiment, one of the most hard-to-find unit designations. Constructed from a distinctive dove grey cloth—seen occasionally on high-quality officer caps—it features a tight black velvet centre band, matching white buttons, and untouched silver officer’s cords. The national SS eagle and skull are original to the cap, with the eagle appearing as if factory-applied. Size approximately 56.
The visor shows period wear with finger and thumb marks to the interior, and the maroon underside retains its original finish. The brushed fawn cotton lining, grained silk inner crown, and full leather sweatband all remain intact, showing honest service use. A faint owner's name and the 'T.R.R.2' designation are visible beneath the sweatband, alongside an official ink-stamped marking. Aside from minor moth tracking to the crown and one small nip to the rear waffenfarbe, the cap is free from significant damage.
The Totenkopf Reiter Regiment 2 was formed in mid-1940, with these yellow-piped caps issued to officers for only a brief period before the order was rescinded. The regiment was later absorbed into the SS Cavalry Division Florian Geyer in August 1941. Original in all respects, this is a rare surviving officer’s cap from one of the Waffen-SS’s most distinctive cavalry formations.
