A historically significant collection of paperwork relating to Wilhelm Gairing, SS, who was killed in Warsaw on 18th September 1944. These documents were discovered after the original sale of Gairing’s Wehrpass and provide detailed insight into his service and personal history.
The grouping includes:
• A short biography and pre-war history of Gairing, known as the Lebenslauf
• Handwritten letter to Gairing’s family dated 5th October 1944, describing his death, signed by an SS Untersturmführer from Field Post Number 3501
• Typed letter dated 5th October 1944 from the local Bürgermeister, Josef Obermeier, also an SS Untersturmführer, essentially duplicating the handwritten notice, later countersigned on 7th November 1944
• Two photographs: a group shot of 12 SS men in field grey uniforms and a studio photograph presumed to be Gairing with a female, showing all decorations and insignia clearly
• Additional typed letters to Frau Gairing, including one dated 17th December 1944
• Handwritten letter from Holland, 19th November 1942, pen signed by Wilhelm Gairing, likely to a friend or relative
• Further wartime and post-war documents, including a photograph of Gairing’s grave, 1939 local records, four death cards, and correspondence from the local Bürgermeister to the family
• Invoices for various items related to Gairing
This grouping represents a rare and highly personal record of an SS soldier’s service and family correspondence. It is especially valuable for those seeking to reunite the paperwork with Gairing’s original Wehrpass.
