This is an exceptionally well-preserved Municipal Police (Schutzmannschaft) officer's shako, manufactured by the renowned firm Erel. The size, 57 1/2, is clearly stamped into the inner liner. The green felt sides are in excellent condition and remain entirely free of moth damage.
The black patent leather crown, along with the front and rear peaks, retains a high-gloss finish. The headgear is fitted with its correct aluminium cross-hatched domed chin scales and a matching three-dimensional officer's eagle. It also features the correct bullion wire field cockade and a white horsehair parade plume. While the original elastic band for the plume has perished over time, the plume is currently secured with a small section of lightweight wire.
The interior features a complete officer-grade silk liner. The lower edges of the leather sweatband show minor signs of age-related red rot, but the structure remains sound. The upper inner crown bears the distinct Erel trademark in an Art Deco style, depicting a soldier or officer in a helmet alongside the text EREL TSCHAKO. This is a very fine example of a high-quality police headpiece from a premier manufacturer.
