This is an M43 field cap for a Luftwaffe officer, likely reflecting private tailoring but uniquely constructed from the wool material typically used for enlisted ranks. The crown is finished with silver officer's piping, which shows signs of light oxidation.
The insignia features a silver wire eagle of the early narrow-wing, droop-tailed variety. The eagle shows some missing strands and oxidation, while the bullion wire cockade below remains in better condition, having been largely protected by the double-button side curtains. A metallic edelweiss badge is fixed to the left-hand side of the cap.
The interior is fitted with a mid-brown ersatz leather sweatband. The lining is constructed from striped sleeve material commonly used by tailors, showing a distinct colour difference between the areas exposed and those protected behind the sweatband. The upper inner crown bears an original owner's name handwritten in red indelible pencil, which is currently indecipherable. The cap is free of moth damage.
