A superb and extremely scarce Luftwaffe Schellenbaum banner, traditionally suspended from the beak of the large eagle mounted atop the Luftwaffe band’s Schellenbaum. Measuring approximately 32cm x 27cm, this example is constructed in rich yellow flight silk and finished with heavy bullion fringe.
The reverse side is beautifully hand-embroidered with the unit designation Fliegerhorstkommandantur Hildesheim (near Hannover). The obverse displays a finely hand-embroidered Luftwaffe eagle surrounded by four swastikas, all executed with excellent detail.
The banner is complete with its original hanging pole, silver cord, and the brass suspension ring used to attach the banner to the Schellenbaum eagle. Unusually, this example also features a small studded hole at the lower edge—presumably to secure the banner more firmly to the Schellenbaum pole during movement.
Minor age toning to the yellow silk is present, but importantly there is no silk shredding. An exceptional and seldom-encountered artefact of the Luftwaffe bands of WWII.
