A historically important Second World War Kriegsmarine officers display piece produced by Eickhorn. The piece retains the standard naval decorative panels to both sides and is maker marked to Eickhorn. The celluloid grip shows only minor surface abrasions with no cracking, fitted with its original gold portepee in the correct wrap, showing some light thinning to the wire weave in places. The hilt fittings retain good traces of original gilt, with the grip wire intact and bright.
The scabbard retains gilt in the more protected areas, with several period distortions and indentations visible towards the lower section. The reverse of the scabbard, just below the throat, is engraved with the name “Renner”. Complete with a matching set of officers’ hangers, which, like the portepee, show some fraying to the black fabric, and retain the original steadying chain.
This display piece is attributed to Horst Renner, born January 1920. He joined the Kriegsmarine in May 1940, initially serving on a destroyer. By June 1941 he was serving aboard U-28, followed by service on U-81 from October 1941. On 16 August 1943 he was posted to the Marine School of Murwik, later serving as a cadet officer on the cruiser Köln in May 1944. From 1 February 1945 until 8 May 1945, he served as Company Chief of the 3rd Abteilung at the Marine School of Murwik. During the war he was awarded the German Cross in Gold (September 1943), as well as the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class. A period photograph of Renner can be found on the “Traces of War” website.
