An ultra-rare arm patch issued to the Free India volunteers serving with German forces during World War II. Prior to the war, India had a strong independence movement, and many Indian soldiers were serving with the British Indian Army across the Far East, North Africa, and Italy. As the war progressed and personnel shortages emerged, the Germans recruited Indian prisoners of war to join their forces in a campaign to fight for Indian independence, led by Subhas Chandra Bose.
This example is one of only two known German-made patches, possibly produced by Bevo of Wuppertal. The patch shows signs of wear, with folding on the reverse and original stitch marks from removal off a tunic. Its rarity makes it one of the most significant Free India German volunteer items.
A remarkable piece for any collector of WWII or Free India military history.
