German WWII Cholm Shield

A good, unused example of the rare and highly sought-after Cholm shield—the scarcest of all officially issued German battle shields from WWII. This piece shows some light rusting around the edges, which has caused minor fracturing to the paper backing, along with slight surface rust to one arm of the Iron Cross and to the right and left edges. Despite this, much of the original finish remains intact.

The army field grey-green backing material is present but thinned in areas, particularly around the top edge. Indistinct pencil markings are visible on the reverse. Issued in recognition of those who endured the brutal encirclement at the Cholm pocket, this shield represents both a significant military honor and a historically important artifact.
