A fascinating and rare transitional example — an original Berndorfer-produced Austrian M17 helmet, size 66, clearly stamped with the Berndorfer Bear mark to the inner rear skirt above the size number. This helmet retains its original Austrian strap posts and was later converted for Austrian cavalry use during the inter-war period, featuring the additional brackets for saddle mounting.

Subsequently reissued by the German Army, it was upgraded with an M40 zinc-banded liner and repainted in the standard field grey finish. The single Heer decal remains clear and well-preserved, showing only light abrasions, while the overall paint finish is excellent with minor surface wear.

As is often seen with helmets that later surfaced in the United States, the liner leather has suffered from what collectors refer to as “American red rot”, resulting in degradation — the liner is now partially detached from one half of the band, with several tongues missing. The original drawstring remains in place. A particularly interesting and highly unusual transitional piece with a clear history of multi-period use.
