This is an ultra-rare and historically significant piece of desert headgear, being a first pattern M.40 visored field cap tailored for the Chaplains Department. The cap is a desirable size 57 and bears a clear manufacturer stamp for Alfred Valet, Mutzenfabrik Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, dated 1942.

The olive-coloured cotton construction and the specific side profile of this cap indicate a transitional style, showing the evolution towards the second model cap that would eventually appear in early 1943. As a factory-produced officer's cap, it features silver twisted cord piping to the crown and the front scallop. The insignia is particularly noteworthy; it retains a first pattern blue-on-tan Bevo woven eagle paired with a second pattern cockade, both factory-fitted. Positioned between the eagle and the cockade is the distinct metal Chaplains Cross, and the unit is further identified by the violet waffenfarbe.

The cap is in virtually unworn condition, making it an exceptional survivor of the North African campaign. The internal markings remain sharp and legible, providing a definitive record of its production and size. This is a premier item for a specialist collection of tropical or departmental uniforms.
