A highly unusual and likely field- or regimentally-tailored example of a converted M.42 overseas cap, reworked into a Bergmütze for wear by a member of the 23rd Panzer Division. This example exhibits signs of extensive use and carries the unmistakable character of a frontline item.
The cap, approximately size 56 or 57, is constructed in fine field grey-green wool with excellent nap remaining. It features a single air vent and a double-button front. Insignia consists of a one-piece BeVo-woven grey eagle on a green background with a national cockade beneath, all hand-applied. The peak, original to the cap and dating from the time of conversion, is in a slightly different shade of field grey-green—a common trait in modified field gear. Wear around the lower forehead area is consistent and spread evenly across both the satin lining and the interior side of the peak.
Most notably, to the left side of the cap is an oval field grey patch bearing the hand-embroidered silver-grey insignia of the 23rd Panzer Division—a seldom-seen and highly distinctive addition that strongly supports association with this elite armoured formation.
A rare and evocative piece of modified combat headgear with clear divisional identity and evidence of prolonged field service.
