A very interesting album containing 59 images, beginning with a large German observation balloon marked with an Iron Cross being hoisted aloft, followed by Western Front scenes, groups of army officers and NCOs, and air-to-ground shots of destroyed buildings. Highlights include a large side-on view of a Maxim 08 in anti-aircraft role with its three-man gun crew and observing NCO, further images of balloons being hoisted, and a captured French aircraft with unusual fuselage insignia. Seventeen loose large-format images show close-ups of balloon unit equipment, trolleyed radio telephone units, winch vehicles, portable hangars, a crashed balloon in a forest, and observers being lifted off the ground in full flying gear, with excellent detail of wicker baskets. The album is accompanied by the owner’s WWII Third Reich-era Wehrpass, including a photograph in civilian dress, born 1894, with pages 12–13 detailing his units and service from 1914 to 1918 in balloon units. A highly appealing album for the ballooning enthusiast.
