A superb example of a Prussian Reserve Dragoon officer’s pickelhaube, featuring a finely preserved leather skull and exceptional gilt fittings throughout. This is a particularly desirable helmet, showing only minimal age-related wear and housed in its original carrying box.
The helmet retains outstanding gilt finish, with only a small area of loss on the rear strap where the mounting rivet makes contact with the exterior trim. The distinctive Dragoon-style front plate displays the Reserve Officer’s Cross at its center, fully gilt and untouched. The correct domed chinstraps for mounted officers are in place, along with square-cut front peak and both the Prussian and national officer-quality cockades.
The tall, slender spike adds to the elegant silhouette of this cavalry helmet. Internally, the helmet features its full mid-tan leather sweatband and a silk liner showing light signs of wear. The shell is stamped ‘53½’ to the upper inner crown. Both the green and red under-peak linings remain intact, with the peaks themselves securely attached. A small split is noted to the inner trim of the front peak but does not affect structural integrity.
Housed in its original issue box, the helmet is accompanied by both the carrying and closing straps, both complete and unbroken. A rare and finely preserved piece representing the elite mounted branch of the Imperial German Army.
