German WWI Prussian Guard Regiment Ersatz Pickelhaube

A standard all-leather pickelhaube, approximately size 54 or 55, with a very good skull showing only minor surface crazing. All chemically patinated field grey fittings are present, including the back strap, removable spike, spike base, front plate, and strap fittings, with some light fading. The front peak trim shows further fading.

The 9-tongued leather liner is complete with its original drawstring. The helmet retains its correct original chinstrap along with both national and state cockades. Marked ‘GR1’ and with pencilled initials of the owner, this could indicate Guard Regiment 1 or Grenadier Regiment 1. Following the supply shortages of 1915, many Guard and Grenadier units received standard Prussian-style helmets with the standard Prussian plate, as seen on this example.

Faint traces of a circular maker’s stamp are visible to the inner upper dome, which retains much original colour. The helmet plate has never been removed, with the leather securing strips untouched since manufacture.
