A very fine and large size all-leather Pickelhaube for a Prussian General; size marked ‘57’. The leather skull is in excellent condition with only minor surface crazing, and both the front and rear peaks remain securely stitched to the body of the helmet.
All gilt fittings are original and matching in tone, including the fluted spike with cruciform base, backstrap, large Guard front plate with enamelled star overlay, curved chin scales, and square-edged front peak trim. The enamel to the front plate is undamaged; both the white background to the motto and the black enamel of the Black Eagle Order remain intact and vibrant.
The helmet is complete with both national and state cockades. The interior retains its original leather sweatband showing light service wear; the inner silk liner is missing. The inner peaks are lined in red and green imitation leather, with the skull retaining its original light tan colour. Size is pencil-marked ‘57’ to the interior.
One split pin to the front section of the cruciform spike base has broken away, but all other split pins, nuts, and washers remain present. A very good and complete example of a highly desirable Prussian General’s dress helmet.
