German WWI Prussian Felt Pickelhaube

This is an ultra-rare and historically significant German WWI Prussian Ersatz Felt Pickelhaube, regimentally issued to Infantry Regiment 74. This all-original, one-piece pressed felt helmet represents a unique wartime adaptation, created during a period of material shortages, and stands out as a superb example of early 20th-century German military ingenuity.

What makes this example truly exceptional is the clear regimental marking to the interior rear peak—‘I.R.74’, denoting Infantry Regiment 74—alongside a crisply stamped date of ‘1915’. It is highly unusual to find any felt Ersatz Pickelhaube with such specific and legible regimental attribution, particularly to the renowned 74th, one of the few regiments entitled to wear the Prussian wappen with the Waterloo scroll, a privilege granted for distinguished service.

The helmet’s skull is constructed from a single molded piece of grey felt and remains in excellent, undamaged condition, with no evidence of a rear spine ever being fitted. It features a non-removable brass spike and circular spike base, original to the helmet. The spike top remains a correct push-fit to the base; although the solder bonding the two elements has aged, the fit remains secure when left undisturbed.

The matching brass Prussian front plate, adorned with the Waterloo scroll picked out in black, retains strong definition and patina. Original wartime leather chinstrap with brass buckles remains present and complete, along with both Prussian and State cockades, adding to the helmet’s authenticity and visual impact.

Internally, the helmet retains its complete liner, including its original drawstring, and shows light, sympathetic restoration around the liner’s attachment area—consistent with careful preservation. The clarity of the markings and the completeness of its components underscore the rarity and quality of this piece.

This Regimentally Marked WWI Ersatz Felt Pickelhaube is a highly collectible and exceptionally scarce example of wartime German headgear.
