A fascinating and characterful example of a Prussian enlisted ranks artillery Pickelhaube from the First World War—this helmet reflects the material constraints of wartime production, with a combination of brass and chemically patinated field grey fittings.

Though unmarked for size, it fits approximately size 53 or 54. The blackened leather skull remains in excellent shape with only minor congealing to the front and rear peaks; both are solidly affixed to the body. The rear trim is finished in field grey, while the ball top and its base are in brass, mounted at a slight angle—evidence of combat damage that adds authenticity to its story.

The Prussian eagle plate, also brass, bears remnants of field grey around the edges. Field grey strap posts and slim metal buckles accompany the original thin chinstrap. Both national and state cockades are present. There is a single split to the front peak trim.

Inside, the nine-tongued black leather liner remains completely intact and supple, retaining its original drawstring. The interior of the skull is clearly marked with a rubber ink stamp “A.R.18,” denoting Artillery Regiment 18.

A compelling piece for collectors of Imperial German militaria, this helmet tells a vivid story of the front lines during the Great War.
