A scarce and desirable example of a Pickelhaube for Infantry Regiment 88, with the faint remains of the unit marking “IR 88” still visible on the inner rear peak when viewed under good lighting.
The all-leather skull is in generally good condition, showing minor creasing and some congealing from age, but remains structurally sound. Both front and rear peaks are securely attached to the helmet body. All brass fittings are present and include the backstrap, tall spike with its circular base, and the Prussian front plate, which is overlaid with the distinctive Oldenburg star in nickel.
The helmet is complete with both its national and Oldenburg cockades. The chinstrap is a nice, grained leather example with subdued brass fittings, consistent with field wear.
Inside, the 10-tongue leather liner remains intact, with some tongues slightly creased but none broken. A solid and increasingly hard-to-find example from a distinguished regional regiment of the Imperial German Army.
