Pickelhaubes from Mecklenburg Strelitz rank among the rarest of all Imperial German regiments due to the small size of this principality’s forces. Mecklenburg Strelitz had only three infantry regiments, with the second battalion forming Infantry Regiment 89; the first and third battalions belonged to Mecklenburg Schwerin.

This example features a large-size leather skull in very good condition, with well-preserved gilt fittings throughout. It is fitted with the correct flat chin scales typical of infantry troops. The front plate is particularly notable, displaying the Reserve Officer’s cross overlaying the Mecklenburg Strelitz plate, complete with accurate lettering on the cross.

There is slight congealing to the leather on the front and rear peaks, but both remain firmly attached. The helmet is equipped with its original officer construction state and principality cockades.

Inside, the mid-tan leather sweatband shows considerable wear consistent with use but remains intact and undamaged, alongside the original inner silk liner. The small leather strap inside the chinstrap, designed to secure the straps together when worn, has unfortunately broken away.

A rare and highly desirable piece for collectors of Imperial German headgear.
