This is a remarkably well-preserved steel lobster tail helmet (kurassier-style) for a member of Jager zu Pferde Regiment Number 5. It is a large size 58, which is clearly stamped into the rear inner lobster tail. The interior upper crown of the skull is maker marked Wunderlich.

The helmet retains all of its original blued finish to the exterior of the lobster tail sections. Consistent with the regulations for regiments 1 through 7, the fittings are executed in white metal, with the exception of the brass domed clip-over chin scales. The helmet is complete with its large-size state and national cockades. The interior features the original eight-tongue leather liner, which remains in good structural condition.

Of particular note is the rare regimental marking. This example is clearly marked in ink blocks to the interior of the leather liner to Regiment Number 5 and is dated 1915. Regimental markings are seldom encountered on this pattern of helmet, making this a highly significant piece for the specialist collector of Imperial German cavalry headgear.
