German WWI Iron Cross First Class with Plate Back

A highly unusual and well-preserved example of the WWI Iron Cross First Class, constructed in a semi-convex style with a good overall finish remaining.

This particular version is fitted with two screw threads—one to the upper arm and one to the lower—designed to be secured via a larger interior steel backing plate. The plate is fixed in place with two nuts, allowing the award to be worn firmly through the uniform.

Marked 800 for silver content, this is a rare and distinctive variation of the classic Iron Cross, seldom encountered.
