This is a very rare and high-quality variant of the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class. The award is constructed with a real silver frame, clearly marked with the 800 silver purity stamp on the lower arm of the reverse. It features a distinctive concave shape, designed to sit flush against the wearer's tunic.
The attachment system is highly unusual, utilizing a large rear disc plate that is secured in place by a smaller brass screw plate with a serrated edge for easy adjustment. This specific and scarce variant is documented in the specialist reference work Nimmergut, Deutsche Orden und Ehrenzeichen, Volume 2, page 1066, number 2559.
The central iron core shows some expected loss of the black finish due to age, which is common for genuine period pieces. The silver frame and the unique reverse hardware have developed a pleasing natural patina. This is a top-tier example for the advanced collector of Great War imperial awards, representing a luxury private purchase variant of the highest standard.
