This is a well-preserved example of a 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class, featuring the desirable screw-back attachment system. This variant was often preferred by officers and combat personnel as it offered a more secure fit to the tunic compared to the standard vertical pin, particularly during active field service.
The award is of flat construction and retains a good level of its original finish to the blackened iron core and the silver frame. The reverse is fitted with a threaded post and a large circular fastening disc, which features a central ridge to assist with grip when tightening. This example is non-maker marked, which is common for many private purchase variants produced during the Great War period.
The screw-back crosses represent a popular area of interest for collectors, showing the variety of private purchase options available to servicemen at the time.
