This is a characterful and service-used example of the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class. The award features a pronounced convex (vaulted) shape, a style frequently preferred by officers and soldiers for its more aesthetic and tailored fit against the uniform tunic.
The cross is non-maker marked, which is typical for many private purchase examples from the Great War era. The reverse is fitted with a sturdy, wide tapering pin, which remains complete with its original hinge and catch. This robust mounting system was designed to withstand the rigours of field wear.
The blackened iron core shows some expected thinning and minor losses to the finish, revealing the metal beneath and attesting to its age and use. The silver frame has developed a natural patination over time. This is a classic example of the premier Prussian award for bravery, showing the honest wear associated with a piece that was worn throughout the conflict.
