This is a high-quality convex example of the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class, featuring a highly specialised mounting system. Rather than the standard pin and hinge, this award is fitted with upper and lower threaded studs located at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions.
The reverse of the cross retains its unusual threaded disc fixings, accompanied by two protective leather pads. This specific method of attachment was favoured by Imperial German aviation personnel, as the screw-back system provided a more secure and permanent fixing when attached to heavy leather flying jackets or tunics, preventing the award from becoming detached during flight operations.
The cross exhibits fine detailing to the core and the silver frame, with the convex curvature adding to its aesthetic appeal. The presence of the original leather backing pieces is a significant detail, illustrating how these awards were adapted for practical field use by pilots and aircrew. This is a distinctive variant with clear historical associations to the German air services of the Great War.
