A rare and fascinating First World War example of the all-steel Ersatz pattern, produced for the Mauser 98/05 series. This late-war emergency model features a one-piece steel hilt showing light surface patina from age, with the retaining catch mechanism present but currently jammed. The saw-backed edge remains in excellent form, retaining all its original teeth and showing a crisp Imperial acceptance mark along the spine.
The accompanying scabbard is free from dents and still displays traces of its original field grey-green finish — a classic feature of wartime issue.
A scarce and desirable early 20th-century display piece that captures the industrial ingenuity and austerity of the Great War period.
