A wonderfully untouched example of an enlisted man's all-leather pickelhaube for a Bavarian Pioneer Battalion, showing honest age and excellent preservation.

The black leather skull remains structurally sound, with some light surface crazing and congealing typical of age. Both front and rear peaks are securely attached. All fittings—including the non-removable spike, circular spike base, rear spine, front plate, peak trim, and strap fittings—are in white metal, as correctly issued to Pioneer troops. The helmet retains its original Bavarian State and national cockades; the State cockade has a small section broken away. The leather chinstrap is intact and fitted with its original white metal buckles.

The interior features the original 9-tongue leather liner, all tongues present, though some eyeholes show splitting from age and use. Hand-inscribed to the inner rear peak is the original owner's name. Faint size markings are visible but difficult to decipher—estimated at size 54 or 55.

Most notably, this pickelhaube is complete with its rare original field cover, marked ‘B.P.’ (Bayerisches Pionier) within a rectangular box. The cover is of a slightly greener material than typically encountered and includes all original securing hooks.

A scarce and desirable Bavarian Pioneer ensemble, ex-Michael Baldwin Collection.
