A highly significant and extremely rare example of a World War I German airship battalion shako—this being the only unit-marked example we’ve encountered in over 50 years of collecting. Items from the Imperial airship units are exceptionally scarce, making this a standout piece for any advanced collection.
The body retains a good, bright finish overall. The rear peak shows slight congealing, with minor crazing to the front, though both peaks remain firmly attached. Fitted with its original leather chinstrap, complete with matching white metal buckles and strap posts. The national enlisted ranks cockade (red, white, and black) is present, along with the Prussian black-and-white cockade positioned above. The Prussian white metal front plate is in excellent condition.
Inside, the nine-tongued leather liner is fully intact, showing only minor signs of wear and complete with its original drawstring. A faint Hoffmann, Berlin maker stamp is visible to the mid-tan leather interior. The inner rear peak is clearly unit-marked: L.A.1889 F.L.A.7 (indicating Airship Unit 1889, Flying Unit 7).
For the serious collector of Imperial German aviation or airship items, this is a truly desirable and rarely encountered piece.
