This is an extremely rare French World War I M18 tank helmet, specifically designed for wear inside motorized armored vehicles, such as tanks. This helmet is a remarkable example of early military technology, and its rarity makes it a highly sought-after collector's item.
The helmet is a good, large size and retains the original horizon blue brush-painted finish, with minor chipping mostly in the current area. The original leather trim on the front is intact but shows some losses due to age and wear. The complete leather liner is still fitted with its original drawstring, although there are minor rodent bites around the rear seam of the liner. Additionally, the helmet retains its original chinstrap.
A previous wearer’s name is scratched into the rear inner skirt of the helmet, adding a personal touch to this historical piece. The liner system retains all its corrugations, and the helmet proudly displays its original circular artillery badge on the face of the helmet. While the leather does show some minor rodent nips, the helmet remains in impressive condition for its age.
This M18 tank helmet is a rare and significant piece of World War I history, representing the early development of tank warfare and the protective gear used by French forces in the Great War. Its condition, along with the unique features and personal history, makes it a standout addition to any collection of military artifacts.
