A superb oil-on-canvas portrait measuring 29 x 34 cm (46 x 50 cm including frame), depicting an unidentified officer of the 10th Foot, the Lincolnshire Regiment. The portrait shows the officer in head and upper bust view, wearing his coatee with winged epaulettes. His 10th Foot cross belt plate is clearly visible, and he holds his Bell Top shako in his left hand.
The painting can be dated post-1847, as the officer wears the Military General Service Medal with three clasps for the Peninsular War—an award not issued until that year. Some light ageing is visible around the left elbow and just above the shako, but the artwork remains in excellent condition overall.
The painting is housed in a striking gilded frame, surmounted by a magnificent Victorian coat of arms featuring what appears to be a family crest at its centre. The frame shows minor cracking, a few small chips, and some plaster loss along the lower edge, but remains in bright, presentable condition.
