Recently acquired by us from the son of the owner, a standard British Army duffel coat, which has seen much service wear, complete with its three wooden toggles and its securing ropes. All buttons fitted, two open front pockets, complete with its hood, with its female studs fitted. Two minor stitch repairs. This duffel coat was worn at the crossing of the Rhine in 1945 by Lieutenant Harold Bergbaum, who enlisted in 1939 as a rifleman in a London Territorial Regiment, The Rangers. In 1943, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Essex Regiment and posted to No.3 Commando and then to 4 Commando, then 47 Royal Marine Commando in September 1945.  As a member of 3 Commando,  he was at the crossing of the Rhine, and discharged on 29th July 1946. Harold volunteered before the outbreak of WWII, sensing that war was imminent and served his country proudly from the 1st May 1939 to the 29th July 1946. He saw much action in North West Europe. The coat has some illegible markings on the upper back panel. The coat comes complete with a 1995 copy of his Ministry of Defence war record.
