Known as the Mark I Star, this model was produced by converting First World War shells for renewed use in the Second World War with the addition of a WWII-style liner. This example is marked J.C.A.S. & W Ltd, dated 1938, and displays faint traces of the red and blue Royal Artillery insignia on the shell. The chinstrap remains complete, with the soldier’s service number and the stencilled letters ‘RA’ (Royal Artillery) visible on the inside.
To the interior of the bowl, a white stencilled ‘M’ indicates that the rim was fitted with a mild steel band. These helmets saw extensive use in the early stages of the Second World War, particularly during the Battle of France and the Dunkirk evacuation.
