An interesting and well-preserved Home Front grouping connected to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and the wartime service of Sidney Linbery Hicks, a Barts-trained surgeon who later became an eminent figure in orthopaedic medicine.
The group includes:
-
A black-painted Brodie helmet bearing the shield-form colours of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. The helmet retains its original liner and chinstrap (now partially solidified with age). While the inner fibre liner likely bears a wartime date, it has been left undisturbed to preserve the helmet’s original condition.
-
A 1936 pocket-size booklet titled The Pharmacopœia of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, with the hospital’s gilt coat of arms on the cover—matching the emblem on the helmet.
-
A large bronze medallion commemorating the hospital’s Octocentenary (1123–1923), housed in its original fitted presentation case, with gilt titling to the lid.
-
A hardback book titled 1123–1923: History of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, featuring the same coat of arms and a 1958 dedication inside from Sidney Linbery Hicks to a Janet Steven.
-
A collection of in-house hospital magazines from 1939, each with the St. Barts coat of arms.
-
An original ARP lapel badge.
This well-documented grouping offers a fascinating glimpse into the civilian medical side of Britain’s Home Front during WWII, and the enduring legacy of a notable medical figure.
