This is a rare and evocative piece of early aviation history, being the outer skin only of the distinctive Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Cowl Helmet, the standard protective headwear for pilots and observers during the First World War.
The helmet's inner soft leather lining has been removed, but the outer shell remains a compelling display piece. It is complete with its original front string and chinstrap fitting still secured in place. All the small studs for the earpieces are present and intact.
While the helmet is generally good and strong, exhibiting excellent potential for display, there are some signs of age and wear. Specifically, the stitching is slightly loose on the forehead area and there is some roughness along the back seam. Overall, it is a scarce surviving component of a critically important WWI flying helmet.
