An entirely genuine and well-preserved example of the rare British WWI tank splatter mask, designed to protect early tank crews from flying shrapnel and metal fragments inside the vehicle. The outer leather remains in very good condition, showing no damage, while the interior suede lining is also well-preserved, with minor white paint splashes evident from age or storage.
The distinctive chainmail section below the eye protectors is complete, with only one attachment ring missing on the left side. The original white securing tape has deteriorated over time and has been replaced with an older piece of black elastic, likely dating back 40 to 50 years.
These masks are highly desirable Great War artefacts, and few collectors are aware that the original maker’s name and address were stamped into the metal eye-guard section. This marking is hidden beneath the suede lining and not visible without unpicking the stitching—something not present on reproductions. This detail was confirmed by examination of a similar mask in which the stitching had naturally deteriorated, revealing the stamp.
A scarce and evocative piece of WWI tank warfare equipment.
