A nice condition rare tank mask issued to tank crews at the beginning of the era of tank warfare in 1917. Its leather face covering is all intact and non-rotted. The chamois backing is also good with evidence of much wear and use, with its chainmail and its series of head securing tapes. The official terminology for these masks was splatter mask, and were worn in conjunction with the new leather tank helmets to protect the tank crews from shards of steel that could fly around the interior of a tank after being hit. All of the masks were made by the Company Burys & Company of Sheffield. This can only be seen when the chamois has removed itself or has rotted away, as it is stamped into the steel behind the chamois backing.
