One of the finest examples of English hand embroidery, this cap badge belonged to an officer of the renowned airship R100. Beautifully gold embroidered on red velvet beneath the King’s Crown, with a base of finely ribbed blue and black material bearing the lettering ‘Royal Airship Works’. The R100 was one of a pair of airships—the other being the ill-fated R101. Constructed at the Royal Naval Air Station in Yorkshire, the R100 made its maiden flight in December 1929 and was handed over to the Air Ministry before departing for Canada in July 1930. Following the crash of the R101 in Beauvais, France in October 1930, the Air Ministry grounded the R100 and halted all airship production. The R100 was eventually scrapped in November 1931. A significant artefact from the elegant era of airship travel.
