A rare and historically significant display piece from the First World War, designed in 1916 by celebrated sculptor Felix Joubert and produced in limited numbers by the Wilkinson Sword Company. This distinctive item was commissioned by Lord Howard De Walden for the 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was inspired by traditional Welsh forms. It was issued to selected personnel for use in key operations, including actions just prior to the Battle of Messines.
This example reflects one of the known period variations, featuring the original string-wrapped grip and rope wrist loop threaded through the steel pommel. The central section retains much of its original finish, with some darkened areas consistent with careful storage and age.
Its original scabbard remains present, showing minor shrinkage from age—causing the piece to sit approximately 2cm proud when sheathed. The leather chape and 1914-pattern grained leather belt loop are intact and correct to the model.
A rare and increasingly scarce display piece with direct ties to a storied battalion and one of the most distinctive designs of the period.
