An exceptional 1895 pattern officer’s presentation example with superb craftsmanship and historical significance. Finely detailed floriated scrollwork surrounds the crowned GR cypher, with a beautifully etched dedication panel reading: “Presented to Captain J.W. Shaw by Officers, NCO, Men and Committee Platoons 5 and 8 B 1st Battalion Barnsley & District W.R. Volunteers, as a mark of esteem, 27th November 1916.” The craftsmanship of Sanderson Brothers, Sheffield, is clearly evident in the precision and depth of the detailing.
The nickel-plated guard retains a bright and near-pristine finish, while the ray skin grip remains excellent, complete with intact grip wire. Housed in its original field service leather scabbard, which shows no abrasions and retains its suede knot in fine condition. A rare and distinguished First World War presentation display piece of notable quality and provenance.
