A rare and outstanding example of a bell top shako from the reign of William IV. The leather top and peak remain in superb condition, with strong stitching that has not rotted and leather that has not been pierced or distorted. The beaver sides are excellent, showing no moth damage. While the helmet does not carry a regimental distinction, the fittings—finished entirely in black—suggest possible use by a Yeomanry or Rifle regiment. Lions head motifs in black are fitted to either side to suspend the green corded cap lines. One individual plate from the chin scales is missing on one side. The original black horsehair plume remains complete.
The interior is exceptionally well-preserved, with an intact red leather sweatband and full red silk lining. The lining shows only slight staining and light foxing with age, but remains strong and without deterioration. A very fine and rare survivor from the William IV period.
