This is an evocative pair of Victorian-era Hussar officer's dress boots, possessing significant research potential due to their clear provenance. The boots are constructed in the traditional tall style, featuring decorative gilt lace around the tops and a central oval boss. Over time, the gilt finish has dulled to a sophisticated silver tone, reflecting their genuine age and service history.
The interior of the boots provides excellent historical detail, bearing the maker's mark of Bartley and Sons, 493 Oxford Street, London. Furthermore, they are inscribed with the original owner's name: J. S. Wyam Esquire, 13th Hussars. The 13th Hussars were a prestigious cavalry regiment with a long history of service throughout the Victorian era.
In terms of condition, the boots show honest wear consistent with their age. The lace at the top of both boots is slightly loose in places with some original stitching as found. The leather in the shoe section has become slightly distorted over the decades, and the pair would benefit from careful softening and reshaping for optimal presentation. These are offered strictly as historical artefacts for mannequin or cabinet display rather than for contemporary wear.
