A superb pre-First World War display piece produced by the renowned Thornhill Company of London, with a history dating back to 1734. Measuring 32cm in total length, with a 19cm original polished section clearly stamped ‘VR’ over ‘Thornhill, London’. The piece features a beautifully chequered black horn grip attached to the steel tang, secured with three rivets, and complemented by a straight steel cross guard. Fitted into its original leather scabbard, complete with its narrow belt loop. The grip retains exquisite cross-hatched detailing, reflecting the high-quality craftsmanship of Thornhill. Various examples of Thornhill pieces are illustrated in full colour in The London Knife Book: An A to Z Guide to London Cutlers 1820 to 1945. The Thornhill Company closed in 1912.
